Plum and Brie Bites

Monday, December 20, 2010

We love that our new condo building has a sense of community. It’s something our old apartment building really lacked. Now, we have a yahoo groups message board where people try to meet up for doggie play dates, share info about our developing area, or voice concerns happening in the building.

Yesterday, my condo had a little holiday party in the lobby so we got to meet some more of our neighbors, now surpassing the number of people I knew in my old building after a few years. It felt so nice and festive with the glowing fireplace and big red poinsettias. Everyone brought treats to share, cookies, beer, champagne, fruit…I brought these Plum and Brie Bites.

Caramel Macchiato Cupcakes

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

It was time to make something special for Winnie’s birthday. Besides that, I kind of owe her. She was one of my first friends in college, possibly the second person I met. We were sitting next to each other in an economics class (theater style seating) when I just fell asleep on her. I had yet to speak to her but I already drooled a bit. Anyone who will then foster a friendship with the weird girl that just fell asleep on them is surely the sweetest and most forgiving person ever. We’ve been friends for 12 years now.

Blueberry Topped Fiori di Sicilia Cake

Sunday, February 7, 2010

It was time to make a birthday cake for my little brother, Justin, 6 foot 1 inch tall and about twice my weight, but still my little brother. He doesn’t really get excited about cake so I struggled a little over this one. Lon reminded me that Justin isn’t into frosting. It seems he often wipes some off. Janny reminded me that Justin likes blueberries. So, despite using blueberries on a cake just recently, I was going to do it again, but in a birthday cake with no frosting. I know some would not call it a birthday cake if it does not don the billowy puffs and swirls of sugar, so if that’s you, just call this a perfect tea time cake.

Blueberry Coconut Cream Cake

Sunday, January 17, 2010

It was Angie’s birthday and Angie is a Taste Bud, a term I’ve given to friends who share my love of food and have impeccable taste. I get restaurant recommendations from her all the time. You can thank her for introducing us to Degustation, Eletarria (closed now), The Red Head, and many more. She’s no stranger to the bakery scene either, so my brain was cranking. What would it take to impress her?

Rugelach

Thursday, December 17, 2009

Rugelach, not to be confused with arugula (a lovely peppery green), is a traditional Jewish pastry. To pronounce correctly, you should sound like you’re coughing up phlegm at the end.

Rugelach is the perfect thing to make this time of year. First of all, you can use it for Hannukah or Christmas because everyone loves it. You can make a huge batch and bring to both houses like us, one Jewish (sorta), one not. My Chinese family got addicted to rugelach from eating the giant boxes from Costco, which are dangerously good. Secondly, in December, fresh fruits are not very good in New York, so jams, preserves, and dried fruits are what’s in season.

Double Chocolate Truffle Cupcakes

Friday, November 20, 2009

It was another day for experimenting, and again, things did not come out quite as expected, but just like the Cloud Topped Pumpkin Loaf (which I hope to be famous for one day), these cupcakes were a hit, and will remain in my repertoire.

Mini Refugiado: Guava Cheese Pastry

Thursday, November 5, 2009

One of our favorite stops in Los Angeles was Porto’s Bakery. Everything was fresh and delicious at shockingly low prices. I’m dreaming about them expanding to New York one day but I know that’s a long shot so I may have to recreate some of their treats for myself. One of the pastries we enjoyed was a flaky and buttery pastry with a guava and cream cheese filling. They called it the Refugiado, but I’m not sure why it’s called the Refugee. (Hey Latino friends, holla if you know. ) Those layer-y doughs are a lot of work for home bakers and so is the idea of getting fresh guava to make a jam or preserve for yourself. Don’t worry, I came up with an easier alternative.

Cherry Almond Cookie Pies

Sunday, October 11, 2009

A wedding tradition in Pittsburgh is the Cookie Table, where friends and family bring cookies to put on the table. It’s quite a spread, as you can imagine, and everyone gets to participate in their own way. It’s one of the coolest traditions ever, that I would have adopted, regardless of being in New York, had I known about it before.

Lemon-Lime Cupcakes

Saturday, June 27, 2009

For Sabrina’s birthday, the Dora cake was the main birthday cake, but I’m not a fan of how fondant tastes, so I also prepared cupcakes. It turns out, all the kids happily ate the Dora cake. Shows how much I know about kids, but I’m still glad we had these Lemon-Lime Cupcakes for the adults. It’s a lemon cake with lime curd cream cheese frosting, light and summery, perfect for the great weather we had today (finally!)

Banh Mi Burgers

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Since I made the Carrot and Daikon Slaw, I’ve been anticipating a Banh Mi Sandwich, but when I started making dinner, I had a wild craving for some juicy red meat. The compromise was a Bahn Mi Burger. There’s no way that could be bad right? Not only was it not bad, Lon and I gobbled it down, barely coming up for air, and then agreed to make it again soon. We also contemplated opening a little shop that only sold Banh Mi Burgers and taro fries. Yes, we did have it with taro fries. It was perfect.
